I've always thought of myself as a hardcore Metal Gear Solid fan. I've finished every game in the canonical universe, but you can still enjoy this game even without playing the previous ones. Although it does certainly add something more if you've gone through the earlier ones.

Well said, Evan. My dad actually bought Metal Gear Solid when it came out in '98, but he never got around to playing it, so I picked it up. The rest is history...:D

I agree wholeheartedly with what you're saying. I was planning on putting it off for a while in lieu of studying, but I couldn't keep myself away. I'm glad I gave in. I beat it this morning, and it was a pretty incredible experience the whole way through. I'd definitely recommend playing through 1, 2 and 3.

I'd almost recommend stopping 4 and shooting through those others quickly. Having played all of the cannon Solid games, aside from the PSP outing, I can say it definitely helped my enjoyment of the story. There were also, as one would expect, lots of twists and lots of spoilers related to the first three games. So, if you play through MGS4 before the others, you'll loosely know what's going to happen in each MGS and it may impact your enjoyment.

Anyhoo, back to MGS4, the game kept raising the bar all the way through. I was constantly being surprised, right up through the credits. Graphically, while the game may not be bleeding edge, I don't think we're going to see a game that looks as good, let alone a game that looks better, for a while.
