Have never played such a great game before, I thought the excellent Valkyria Chronicles was refreshing and great enough for a while, but MGS4 is stunningly good, it is such a masterpiece that I haven’t encountered before, I am glad that I hadn’t hesitated too long on whether I should buy it (I hadn’t played much of the older MGS games - MGS, MGS:TS, MGS2, MGS3 - that I had bought before).
The story, the graphics, the presentation, the game play, everything just add up perfectly so far. MGS4 will be THE true next gen game for a while IMHO.
In order to enjoy MGS4 the most, I should play through the old ones before continuing MGS4, but the temptation on continuing is simply too high, may be I will play them after finishing MGS4 once, then play through the older ones and go back to MGS4 again.

I agree wholeheartedly with what you’re saying. I was planning on putting it off for a while in lieu of studying, but I couldn’t keep myself away. I’m glad I gave in. I beat it this morning, and it was a pretty incredible experience the whole way through. I’d definitely recommend playing through 1, 2 and 3.
I’d almost recommend stopping 4 and shooting through those others quickly. Having played all of the cannon Solid games, aside from the PSP outing, I can say it definitely helped my enjoyment of the story. There were also, as one would expect, lots of twists and lots of spoilers related to the first three games. So, if you play through MGS4 before the others, you’ll loosely know what’s going to happen in each MGS and it may impact your enjoyment.
Anyhoo, back to MGS4, the game kept raising the bar all the way through. I was constantly being surprised, right up through the credits. Graphically, while the game may not be bleeding edge, I don’t think we’re going to see a game that looks as good, let alone a game that looks better, for a while.
The other games are incredible as well my friend. Give them a playthrough. You won’t regret it.

I’ve always thought of myself as a hardcore Metal Gear Solid fan. I’ve finished every game in the canonical universe, but you can still enjoy this game even without playing the previous ones. Although it does certainly add something more if you’ve gone through the earlier ones.
Well said, Evan. My dad actually bought Metal Gear Solid when it came out in ‘98, but he never got around to playing it, so I picked it up. The rest is history…:D
