As you (Silent Hill fans, I mean) should know, there are 2 Silent Hill games (distinct games, not ports) after Silent Hill 4 The Room that were not developed by Team Silent, one of them being Silent Hill Origins, or Silent Hill Zero in Japan, for PSP, and the other being Silent Hill 5, now called Silent Hill Homecoming for next gen. consoles (PS3/360).
Both do not look impressive nor do they make me feel like Silent Hill, I have bought the PSP Origins and think it is not quite the Silent Hill that I wanted, I am not sure if I will buy Homecoming from the screens and arts that I’ve viewed.
My coverage on Silent Hill will probably stay as is for the time being (it had stayed as is for a while already), unless there is another installment or another franchise by Team Silent.
To me, the pinnacle of the series is Silent Hill 2, I love it the most, but the entry that introduced me to the Silent Hill world is Silent Hill 3.

I agree with you Maskrider, the Silent Hill series has really affected me, 2 most of all, and I feel that now that the series is continuing on without the original makers, it’s just not the same thing.
I bought and played through Origins, the PS2 port, and though there was nothing overtly “wrong” about the game, storywise it didn’t feel necessary, and I don’t think it added much to the series as a whole. Also it just didn’t have that special, indescernible quality that’s uniqe to the other games.
Also, thanks for your incredible Silent Hill galleries, they’ve been a real joy to peruse.
Take care!
Thank you. It has been a joy to share with other Silent Hill fans.
well… i think some of the “new sh franchises are quite boring” imean like they dont usually scare you and sometimes things just get to predictable…
I put it in this way - Silent Hill (by Team Silent) is a piece of true J-Horror (with Western setting) with accent on atmosphere, symbolism and paranormal, weird.
SH:0 was done by American developer - now it is Western horror with eye on action - symbolism and J-Horror’ness are pushed away, sadly.
SH5 is developed by another Americans and probably will contain more the Western way of horror - more action and shallowness.
Such are my expectations.
i prefer SH3 for the background
the best storyline is SH2
I felt that Silent Hill has always been lacking in its gameplay. Like an old sci-fi series, it relied heavily on story and emotional connection with the audience to keep itself alive. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but I don’t see why it can’t have both. If only someone could do it right, and perhaps with some work, even an American could do it. I don’t expect 5 to be the one that re-lights the silent hill passion, and origins was a joke.
However, I still have hope for a future in silent hill.
To me, it’s not about American or Japanese, the things that make it Silent Hill to me are the characters, monsters, story and its background research, atmosphere, presentation, and then the game play. It will be perfect if you have both, but you don’t most of the time.
From what I’ve read, Homecoming is still a decent game to many gamers, no matter it is my Silent Hill or not. I’ll give it a try, much like I bought Silent Hill Zero (Origin in US/EU). But don’t have much expectations on it, though.
The issue that got my nerve the most is the adherence to the Silent Hill movie (I watched it in cinema day one and I think it is just a shit movie that tied too many things in the Silent Hill world together).
